AAPCHO Condemns HHS Disclosure of Medicaid Data with Immigration Enforcement

WASHINGTON—The Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations (AAPCHO) today released the following statement regarding media reports that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) shared sensitive Medicaid beneficiary information from California, Illinois, Washington, and Washington, D.C., including immigration status, with Department of Homeland Security immigration enforcement agencies.

Jeffrey B. Caballero, MPH, executive director of AAPCHO, said:

“HHS’s sharing of confidential Medicaid data with immigration officials is a breach of public trust and dangerous infringement on patient privacy. We are appalled that HHS officials blatantly disregarded longstanding laws and regulations enacted to protect patient rights. This is a gross weaponization of our health care system that further erodes confidence in our public health institutions.

“Every person should be free to see a doctor without fear that doing so could jeopardize their safety and wellbeing. We strongly urge the Trump administration to reverse course and ensure that all Medicaid data is used only for legitimate health care purposes.”
