AAPCHO Applauds Supreme Court Decision Blocking Trump Administration from Ending DACA

WASHINGTON — The Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations (AAPCHO) today released the following statement applauding the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that prevents the Trump administration from ending Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration did not appropriately consider the hardship to DACA recipients and did not follow procedures required by law. The ruling allows the DACA program to continue but does not provide a permanent solution and pathway to citizenship for the hundreds of thousands of youth and young adults including Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders relying on its protections.
Adam Carbullido, AAPCHO’s director of policy and advocacy, commended the court decision to block the Trump administration’s attempt to end DACA and called on Congress to provide permanent legal protections and a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients.
“Today’s Supreme Court decision is a victory for immigrant communities. DACA has kept families together – enabling many immigrant children and young adults to live as our neighbors, family members, and friends without fear of deportation.
“Many DACA recipients work as essential health care workers and have been critical to providing culturally and linguistically appropriate care to the communities they serve. AAPCHO applauds the court’s ruling blocking the Trump administration from ending DACA and requiring it to consider how doing so will negatively harm more than 800,000 youth and young adults, including more than 120,000 DACA-eligible Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
“While today’s ruling rejects the Trump administration’s cruel attempt to upend thousands of immigrant families, it does not stop the administration from trying to end the program in the future. Congress must step in to provide certainty and a roadmap to citizenship for DACA recipients and fix our broken immigration system. As an association of community health centers that provide care to all who come through their doors, AAPCHO is committed to ensuring that patients and their families can live in our communities and receive the care they need without fear.”
